Description
The Tomb of Jane Maria Clouson, located in Brockley Cemetery, is a funerary monument created around 1871 by J. Lord, a mason from Deptford. It was erected through public subscription. The monument features a Portland stone figure of a semi-kneeling infant in prayer, gazing upwards, set upon a tall pedestal made of yellow sandstone, with both the base and upper section crafted from Portland stone. Notable decorative elements include a relief of a pointing hand emerging from clouds, a bible and cross flanked by wings, billing doves, and a circle of eternal torches.
The inscription commemorates a motherless girl who was murdered in Kidbrooke Lane, Eltham, on the night of Tuesday, April 25, 1871. She was taken to Guy's Hospital, where she died on Sunday, April 30, 1871, at the age of 17. The inscription describes her as agreeable in manner, amiable, and affectionate in disposition, with her last words being: "Oh! Let me Die."
