Description

The Deptford War Memorial, located in Brockley Cemetery, was created around 1920 for the Imperial War Graves Commission. It features a curved screen made of Portland stone and a Corinthian column crafted from Carrara marble, which stands on a three-staged base. The memorial is surrounded by a yew hedge and a shallow stone kerb.

The design is symmetrical, with the column positioned on the central axis. It is inscribed with the words: "here rest the honoured remains of British soldiers sailors and airmen citizens of Deptford who gave their lives for their country during the Great War 1914-1918." The screen also bears the inscription "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE," along with 14 raised panels that list the names and regiments of the fallen. The central panel commemorates members of His Majesty's forces who died in service and are buried elsewhere in the cemetery from 1939 to 1945. Additionally, it honors the memory of 165 casualties from the Great War. The memorial is set in the turf and includes 24 numbered stone plaques.
