Description
The cemetery entrance gates at Ladywell Cemetery were designed by William Morphrew and constructed in 1857 for the Lewisham Burial Board. These gates are made of wrought iron and are set between stone gate piers. The piers are square with a set back and sloping tops that culminate in saddleback gables. The gates feature an ornate Gothic design, including the monogram of the Lewisham Burial Board in the three lower hubs of each gate, along with trefoil and barley sugar decoration above. The name "LADYWELL CEMETERY" may have been added later or could be a reworking of the original name "LEWISHAM CEMETERY," but the style of the lettering clearly dates to 1857.
