Description
The Auchterderran War Memorial, designed by Alexander Murdoch in 1922, is a red sandstone structure that commemorates the fallen from both World Wars. The memorial features a triple-stepped base that leads to a narrow plinth with a moulded cornice. This supports a square pier with disengaged columns on scroll bases at each corner, which are linked by an entablature above. The south face of the memorial bears the inscription:
"In grateful memory of the men of this District who fell in the Great War. Also of those who fell in the 1939-1945 war."
Below this is the phrase, "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE," accompanied by three relief-carved figures in uniform, topped with a laurel wreath. Above, there is a large fluted cross with foliate boss-like points, set on a cavetto moulded plinth with scrollwork. The names of the fallen are inscribed on the west, north, and east faces of the memorial.
The memorial is complemented by gatepiers, a boundary wall, and railings. The gatepiers are pyramidal-coped and dry-dashed, while the boundary wall is low-coped and the railings are made of cast iron.
