Old Miner's Institute, 20 Main Street, Bowhill, Auchterderran

The Old Miner's Institute, located at 20 Main Street in Bowhill, Auchterderran, is a disused former institute built in the late 19th to early 20th century, with some additions at the rear. It features a rectangular plan and is constructed of polychrome brick, primarily red with contrasting brick dressings. The building has a base, a billeted band, and eaves courses, along with a roundheaded doorway that has a hoodmould and dividing pilasters.

On the west elevation, there are five two-storey bays on the right and a single-storey section on the left, although all openings are blocked. The outer left bay has a pedimented, roundheaded doorway with a hoodmould, while there are four windows to the right and regular fenestration on the first floor. The single-storey bays have three windows in the centre and right, an altered doorway (originally a window?) in the penultimate bay to the left, and another window to the outer left, which features a stop-chamfered angle beyond.

The south elevation has two windows on each floor and a blinded oculus in the gablehead. The roof is covered with purple slates, and the building has coped ashlar skews, brick stacks with mutulated coping, and decorative terracotta ridge tiles.
