Description
St Fothad's Parish Church, located on Carden Avenue in Auchterderran, features a crypt dated 1676, which may include earlier materials. The crypt is a small, rectangular building with a slated roof and constructed from rubble. It has a moulded doorway on the west side, which is blocked, and includes a dated lintel and a pediment that displays the Kinninmonth coat of arms. On the south side, there is a memorial slab for the Kinninmonth family, featuring a pediment with a skull and crossed bones, and the initials "IKMW" representing John Kinninmonth and Margaret Wemyss in the tympanum. A blinded window is present on the north side.
The graveyard surrounding the church contains gravestones from the 18th century and later. The earlier gravestones are mainly of a simple block pedimented style with inscriptions, including a memorial for Thomas Birnel from 1727, which features gardening tools and the initials TM and RG alongside weavers' tools on the reverse. The 19th-century memorials are predominantly classical in style, featuring urns, pilasters, and obelisks. Various carvings can be found throughout the graveyard, including sand-glasses, crowns, bells, spades, children's heads with wings, goblets, skulls, suns, and stars. Additionally, moulded balusters and a carved panel set into the random rubble next to the west elevation of the crypt commemorate John Pindar, a poet.
