Description
Balgreggie Farm is an earlier to mid-19th century farmhouse, and may include earlier fabric. It is a two-storey, gabled building constructed of snecked whinstone rubble with harl, tabbed margins, and ashlar quoins. The building features a part base and string courses.
The north elevation has an advanced gable to the left of centre, displaying a timber porch with moulded capitals, mock beaming, and a pendant finial beneath a slated canopy. A modern timber door is set within the porch, flanked by small-pane lights and a plate glass fanlight. A window is positioned to the left at the first floor, and a blind tablet is to the right. A pendant finial adorns the gablehead, mirroring the porch design. Two bays are situated to the right of centre, with asymmetrical window placement. Dormerheaded windows break the eaves at the first floor.
The east elevation features an advanced gable to the left of centre with a canted window at ground level that sweeps to the first floor window, with an eroded panel between the floors. A window is present in the bay to the right at ground level, with a dormerheaded window breaking the eaves above.
On the south elevation, a window is centrally placed, with another in a bay to the left at both ground and first floor levels, the latter featuring dormerheads breaking the eaves. A slightly advanced gable contains a window to both floors in a bay to the right.
The west (entrance) elevation has a modern door with an adjacent window to the outer right at ground level. A two-part window is central, with a further window to the left. The first floor features a bipartite window in the gablehead and a small window to the left beneath a swept roof.
The windows are mostly timber sash and case with 10- or 12-pane glazing patterns and plate glass. More modern windows are found on the west elevation, and the first-floor north windows are dormerheaded. The roof is covered with graded grey slates. Cavetto-coped ashlar stacks rise from the roof, topped with polygonal cans, along with plain bargeboarding and exposed eaves.
The interior includes decorative cornicing and a white marble fireplace in the principal ground floor room. Panelled shutters and a timber balustered staircase with finials are also present.
Adjacent to the farmhouse, immediately to the west, are single-storey, U-plan, gabled former stables and carriage house with a service court. These are constructed of rubble and have a cavetto-coped ashlar stack, plain bargeboarding, and exposed eaves. The west elevation has two broad gables, each with an enlarged garage opening, flanking a link wall with a pedestrian opening below moulded coping. A distinctive M-gable is visible on the outer right of the south elevation, and a projecting gable extends from the centre of the east. A detached rectangular building, formerly a laundry, is located to the south, featuring a timber roof ventilator.
Rubble boundary walls enclose the site, with the wall to the southwest possibly marking the boundary of a former walled garden. Decorative cast-iron gates provide access.
