Description

This late 19th century farmhouse, located in Middleton of Fonab, is a two-storey, three-bay structure that includes an adjoining dairy. It is built from coursed rubble with granite margins and quoins, featuring stone mullions.

The southeast, or principal elevation, is symmetrical with a central bay that has a bipartite window above a projecting porch, which is topped with a catslide roof. To the left of the porch is a deep-set, two-leaf panelled timber door. The outer bays each have a bipartite window on the ground floor and a first-floor window that breaks the eaves into a dormerhead.

On the northeast elevation, there is a gabled bay to the left with a window on each floor. The central bay has a piended roof and also features a window on each floor, with the first-floor window breaking the eaves into an oversized piended dormerhead, accompanied by a broad stack to the left. There is an additional window in the lower bay on the right.

The northwest, or rear elevation, is single-storey with a gambrel roof and has two windows, with an ancillary structure adjoining to the outer right.

The southwest elevation, which faces the steading, has a gable to the right with a ground floor window and a smaller window in the lower bay on the left. There is a pedestrian entrance on the outer left with a link wall beyond.

The windows throughout the building are timber sash and case, featuring a multi-pane glazing pattern for the upper sashes over two- and four-pane lower sashes, while the single-storey bays have plate glass glazing. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the chimney stacks are made of coped ashlar with cans. The eaves are deeply overhanging with plain bargeboarding, and there are cast-iron downpipes with decorative fixings.

Inside, the farmhouse features plain cornices, panelled reveals, architraved doors, and timber fireplaces on the first floor. An inner door has margined, etched glazing, and there is a timber-balustered dog-leg staircase with finialled newels.

The ancillary building, which is slated and constructed of rubble and ashlar, forms a small courtyard at the rear. It has boarded timber doors and a timber sash and case window with a multi-pane upper sash over a plate glass lower. The interior includes glazed ceramic tiles and stone shelves.
