Description
The Coach House at Fonab House, located on Port-Na-Craig Road, dates from around 1820 and is a classical former stable courtyard designed in an L-plan. The building features narrow bands of snecked rubble with squared rubble dressings and voussoirs, along with chamfered arrises.
On the northeast elevation, there is a tall pedimented bay that contains a blocked window set in a recessed, round-headed panel, which leads to a blind roundel on the tympanum. To the left, there is another blocked window in the courtyard wall, which has a rounded angle on the outer left.
The northwest elevation presents an asymmetrical facade with a window that has been converted from a door in the outer left bay. Immediately to the right is a broad two-leaf boarded timber door, with evidence of a blocked window further to the right.
The southwest elevation, which serves as the entrance, features a two-leaf boarded timber door to the right of a piended bay located to the left of center. The wall of the courtyard is set back to the right, with a rounded angle on the outer right.
On the southeast elevation, the coped courtyard walls slope down to slightly lower pyramidally-coped round gatepiers, with an ironwork gate positioned at the center.
Within the courtyard, the southeast elevation includes a broad two-leaf boarded timber door located below a piended former hayloft opening, along with flanking doors. The northeast elevation features a lean-to range with a door in the bay to the left of center and a small window to the right, along with additional doors in the outer bays.
The building has 4-pane glazing in fixed timber windows, grey slates on the roof, and ashlar-coped skews.
