Ayr Riding School, Hillfoot Road, Ayr

Ayr Riding School, located on Hillfoot Road in Ayr, is a late 18th-century building that has undergone alterations. It features a single storey and an attic, originally designed as a U-plan complex, which now forms a courtyard-plan. The exterior is finished with harl and whitewash.

The southwest entrance elevation consists of 12 bays, with a raised central pend and a keyblocked segmental arch. The outer left and right bays are slightly advanced, each containing glazed timber doors set within arched recesses. There are two arched recesses between these bays, also with glazed timber doors, and windows at the first floor that break the eaves to create flanking attic dormers, although there is no window in the central section to the right.

On the southeast elevation facing Hillfoot Road, there are gabled bays at the outer right and left, featuring gothic arched recesses and central arched entrances with timber glazed doors. The outer bays are blind, and there are single arched windows in the attic.

The courtyard's southwest elevation has a raised central pend with a segmental arch and a fanlight window above. Glazed timber doors are located to the outer right and left of the section to the right, with a single window between the doors on the left and two single windows between the doors on the right. There is also a single window in the attic. To the left of the section, there are two glazed timber doors and two single windows, along with a single attic window. The northeast elevation features a glazed timber door to the advanced section on the left, two glazed timber doors with flanking windows (plus an additional window to the left), and two gabled dormers in the attic above. The outer right and left sections have glazed timber doors and a central entrance to the section on the right, with single windows flanking. The southeast elevation has steps leading to a central entrance with a glazed timber door and flanking single windows, along with two gabled dormers in the attic. The northwest elevation includes a central arched pend, a single gabled dormer in the attic, and glazed timber doors at the center of each flanking bay, with a smaller single inner window and a bipartite outer window, plus gabled dormer attic windows.

The building features predominantly modern 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with a gabled, piended, and platformed slate roof, stone skews, rooflights, coped gablehead and pitch stacks, and circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.

The interior was not seen in 1999. Additionally, there is a coped boundary wall that partially encloses the site.
