Description
The archway and gates at Ayr Cemetery, designed by John Murdoch in 1862, feature a four-centred arch made of painted sandstone. The arch is framed by octagonal buttresses that rise to squat pinnacles, with decorative work along the eaves course and a crenellated parapet. The central panel displays the Ayr coat of arms, and there are flanking pedestrian entrances with gabled ball-finials that differ at each entrance.
To the southwest of the entrance gate is a single-storey and attic lodge, which has three bays and is constructed from squared sandstone. It includes a base course and hoodmoulds over the ground floor windows. The central entrance has a timber door, with a bipartite window to the left and a two-leaf glazed door to the right. There are single bargeboarded dormers on both the outer right and left sides of the attic.
The lodge features lying-pane glazing, a slate roof, stone skews, corniced gablehead stacks, and both polygonal and circular chimney cans. The interior was not seen in 1999.
Additionally, there are two single-storey ancillary structures attached to the lodge, a two-leaf iron gate at the main entrance, and single iron gates at the flanking pedestrian entrances. The northern elevation has square-plan gatepiers and iron gates, while a coped rubble boundary wall encloses the site, topped with decorative iron railings at various sections.
