Description

John Murdoch, 1862. 4-centred archway to Ayr Cemetery. Painted sandstone. Arch framed by octagonal buttresses; rising to squat pinnacles; decorative work to eaves course; crenellated parapet; Ayr coat of arms to central panel. Flanking shouldered pedestrian entrances; gabled ball-finial (differing to each entrance) sections at apex.

LODGE (56 HOLMSTON ROAD): single storey and attic, 3-bay lodge to SW of entrance gate. Squared sandstone. Base course; hoodmoulds to ground floor windows. Timber door to central entrance; bipartite window to left; 2-leaf glazed door to right; single bargeboarded dormers to outer right and left at attic.

Lying-pane glazing. Slate roof; stone skews; corniced gablehead stacks; polygonal and circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1999.

ANCILLARY STRUCTURES, GATES, GATEPIERS, RAILINGS AND BOUNDARY WALL: 2 single storey ancillary structures attached to lodge (see above); 2-leaf iron gate to main entrance; single iron gates to flanking pedestrian entrances. Square-plan gatepiers and iron gates to N elevation; coped rubble boundary wall encloses site; decorative iron railings atop to intermittent sections.
