Description

Holmston Primary School, located on Holmston Road in Ayr, was built in 1883 with a southern extension added in 1997. This single-storey, nine-bay primary school features an H-plan layout and Gothic detailing. The northern elevation is constructed from coursed, bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings, while the eastern and western elevations are made of rubble.

The northern entrance elevation facing Holmston Road has a grouped arrangement of windows: one large central gablet rises above three single central windows, featuring a stepped segmental-headed ornamental name and date stone. Flanking this are two pairs of bipartite windows. To the left, there is a lean-to entrance porch at the re-entrant angle, which includes a two-leaf timber door within a gablet surround, a single window on the gablet return, and a bipartite gablet window above that breaks the eaves, topped with a finial. To the left of the porch are two single windows, while to the right, there is a timber door with a sidelight and a small-paned square fanlight above, along with two single windows. A tripartite window with trefoil heads to the outer windows is located in the gabled bay to the left, with the Ayr Burgh arms above the central window, all set within a relieving arch. An ashlar bellcote without a bell sits at the apex. To the right, a tripartite window in a stepped and piended bay also features trefoil heads on the outer windows and the Ayr Burgh arms above the central window, flanked by blind arrowslits with trefoil heads.

The western elevation is asymmetrical, featuring an off-centre architraved doorway to the left, flanked by irregular fenestration. The southern elevation is also asymmetrical, with a tripartite window in a stepped piended bay to the right, displaying blind trefoil heads, while the 1997 addition obscures part of this elevation. The eastern elevation mirrors this asymmetry, with an off-centre architraved doorway to the right and irregular fenestration on either side.

The school predominantly has six- and ten-pane timber sash and case windows, a slate roof with rooflights, stone skews, and gablet skewputts, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 1999.

The school is complemented by gatepiers, gates, railings, and a boundary wall. There are pyramidal-capped gatepiers at the centre, left, and right of Holmston Road, with two-leaf iron gates at the centre and right. There are also two pairs of plain gatepiers on Ashgrove Street with two-leaf iron gates. Low coped boundary walls topped with railings are present on the northern and southern elevations, while a higher boundary wall encloses the site on the eastern and western elevations.
