Description
Dated 1883, S extension 1997. Single storey, 9-bay H-plan primary school with Gothic detailing. Coursed, bull-faced red sandstone and ashlar dressings to N; rubble to E and W.
N (ENTRANCE, HOLMSTON ROAD) ELEVATION: grouped 1-7-1. Central gablet rises above 3 single central windows; stepped segmental-headed ornamental name and date stone; 2 pairs of bipartite windows flanking. Lean-to entrance porch to re-entrant angle to left; 2-leaf timber door within gablet surround; single window to gablet return; bipartite gablet window above, breaking eaves; finial; 2 single windows to left. Timber door with sidelight to right and small-paned square fanlight above; 2 single windows to right. Tripartite window to gabled bay to left; trefoil heads to outer windows; Ayr Burgh arms over central window, within relieving arch; ashlar bellcote (no bell); cross at apex. Tripartite window to stepped and piended bay to right; trefoil heads to outer windows; Ayr Burgh arms over central window; blind arrowslits with trefoil heads flanking.
W ELEVATION: asymmetrical; architraved doorway off-centre to left, flanked to left and right by irregular fenestration.
S ELEVATION: asymmetrical; tripartite window to stepped piended bay to right, blind trefoil heads; 1997 addition obscuring elevation to let.
E ELEVATION: asymmetrical; architraved doorway off-centre to right, flanked to left and right by irregular fenestration.
Predominantly 6- and 10-pane timber sash and case windows. Slate roof; rooflights; stone skews; gablet skewputts. Cast-iron rainwater goods.
INTERIOR: not seen 1999.
GATEPIERS, GATES, RAILINGS AND BOUNDARY WALL: pyramidal-capped gatepiers to Holmston Road at centre, left and right; 2-leaf iron gates to centre and right. 2 pairs of plain gatepiers to Ashgrove Street; 2-leaf iron gates. Low coped boundary walls with railings atop to N and S elevations; higher boundary wall enclosing site to E and W elevations.
