Description
The Gate-Lodge at the Council Offices on Holmston Road in Ayr was designed by William Lambie Moffat and William Kerr and is dated 1858. This single-storey, five-bay, near rectangular-plan gabled gate lodge was built for a former poorhouse. It features squared sandstone, harl, and ashlar dressings.
On the north elevation, there is a timber door located in the penultimate bay to the right, with harled walling to the right and a single window at the re-entrant angle to the left. To the left of the entrance, there are three single windows, with the central window rising to form a gable.
The west elevation includes a single window and a dated plaque at the gablehead, along with a square-headed entrance to a single-storey harled section on the left.
On the south elevation facing Holmston Road, there are two single windows to the left and a tympany gable to the right of centre.
The east elevation was not visible in 1999. The lodge features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a slate roof, stone skews, skewputts, gablehead, ridge and tympany wallhead stacks, and circular cans. It also has cast-iron rainwater goods.
The gatepiers, gates, railings, and boundary wall include two pairs of square-plan gatepiers at the main entrance, a two-leaf main iron gate, and flanking single iron pedestrian gates. There is a low coped stepped entrance wall with iron railings atop on the southwest elevation, while a higher coped wall encloses the hospital site. Additional interior site walling surrounds the lodge and extends to the south of the main building.
The interior was not seen in 1999.
