Description
The Stand at Dam Park Stadium in Ayr was designed by Maurice Hickey between 1961 and 1963. This near rectangular-plan Brutalist spectator stand features a deep cantilevered roof and is constructed from brick and concrete.
On the southwest elevation, there are central steps leading to the ground floor section, which includes a two-leaf glazed timber door, clerestory sidelights, and clerestory lighting strips. Plain buttresses divide the bays. A pair of railed stairs in a reverse U-plan supports the concrete flank entrance that leads to the upper seating area, which has plastic seating and plain railed sides. There is also a central upper glazed timber enclosed viewing room beneath the deep cantilever cover.
The northwest elevation has single timber doors located to the outer right and left of the ground floor section, along with two square single windows in the inner bays to the left. Near the center, there is a glazed timber door with two single windows to the right.
On the northeast elevation, a central flat-roofed entrance features a glazed timber door with a letterbox fanlight and sidelights. There are advanced single-storey brick sections to the left and right, with strip lighting above that is divided by plain buttresses rising up to the advanced cantilever.
The stand exhibits a variety of glazing patterns. Inside, as observed in 2012, the original room layout remains largely intact, including changing rooms equipped with timber benches.
