Description
The Pathfoot Building, located on the Stirling University Campus, was designed by Robert Matthew, Johnson-Marshall and Partners and constructed between 1966 and 1967, with later additions including a block to the south in 1993 by John Richards, Gerrard Bakker, and Frank Clark. This complex consists of six linked, single-storey teaching blocks arranged in an extensive rectangular plan, featuring a modular design that includes a main lecture theatre, crush hall, and cafeteria. Each block has a double-height space and runs east to west, with perpendicular glazed corridor blocks running north to south that enclose small courtyards. The building is set on ground that steps up to the north, arranged in terraces within a picturesque landscape.
The main entrance on the southeast features a deep platform canopy and an overhanging roof. The structure is steel-framed and employs a custom-designed prefabricated construction system. The base course is clad with timber panelling, and there are continuous horizontal runs of windows at the ground floor, accented by slightly advanced narrow vertical I-beams. Above, a deep overhanging fascia clad in concrete panels with exposed (Flagrica) aggregate is present. The main entrance is deeply recessed beneath the canopy, mirroring the fascia on the south elevation.
The building predominantly features plate glass in long rectangular red pine casement windows, with some fixed pane glazing extending the full width of structural bays. It has a felted platform roof and raised felt-clad water tanks, along with aluminium flues and concealed rainwater goods.
Inside, the Pathfoot Building showcases a simple Modernist interior characterized by exposed blond timber and large windows. Various rooms are connected by central corridors running east to west in each terrace, with additional corridors linking the individual terraces running north to south. A two-storey crush hall is located at the southeast of the plan, featuring horizontal glazing in its upper section. The interior includes blockwork and demountable partition walls throughout, with suspended ceilings that incorporate integrated lighting.
