Description

This is a two-storey, nine-bay former industrial school located at St Leonard's Wynd in Ayr, built between 1874 and 1876 according to designs by John Murdoch. The building has a U-plan layout and is constructed from red snecked and squared sandstone rubble and brick, featuring red ashlar dressings. It is set back slightly from St Leonard's Road, with a southwest-facing elevation that includes advanced central and outer gabled bays. Following its conversion to residential flats in 2000, there are no surviving interior details.

The school was originally established as the Ayr Industrial School for Boys, created to accommodate children from the earlier mixed Ayr Ragged and Industrial School on Carrick Street. By 1882, there were 102 boys at the school engaged in various trades such as tailoring, netting, shoe-making, and gardening. The building is depicted on the 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey map from 1895, situated among fields and the early stages of residential development along St Leonard's Road.

Industrial schools were designed to provide education and technical skills to poor or orphaned children during the 19th and early 20th centuries. They varied from residential to day schools and were typically established by philanthropic individuals or charities, with the first opening in Aberdeen in 1841. The term 'industrial school' remained in use until the Children and Young Persons (Scotland) Act 1932 was introduced.

St Leonard's Industrial School closed in 1928 due to a decline in student numbers and later became Ayr Technical College. An additional structure to the rear served as an annexe to Ayr Grammar School from the mid-20th century until it was demolished. The former industrial school building underwent alterations for its conversion into flats in 2000, which included the removal of all interior features and some changes to the exterior.
