Description

St Leonard's Parish Church is a Pointed Gothic style church built in 1886 by John Murdoch, with a chancel and hall added in 1910 by P MacGregor Chalmers. The church is situated on a gusset site and features a three-stage tower. The exterior is constructed of snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings. A base course, cill course (on the north-west elevation), mutules to the nave, angle and plain buttresses are visible features.

The north-west elevation, which serves as the main entrance, is two bays wide. Steps lead to a roll-moulded arched entrance within a gabled nave bay, above which is a four-light traceried window. Three blind arrowslits are set into the gablehead, topped by a cross finial; an octagonal pinnacle sits atop a buttress to the right. To the left of the entrance is a three-stage tower, featuring a two-light traceried window at the first stage. A smaller, polygonal tower adjoins to the right, rising through the first and second stages, with arrowslit openings at the upper level. At the third stage are two-light belfry openings within arched surrounds, a lucarne opening to the spire, and flanking octagonal pinnacles culminating in a finial.

The south-west elevation, facing Monument Road, has six bays. It features a two-light lancet window to the nave at ground level to the outer left, followed by four two-light aisle windows (with a pinnacle to the buttress to the outer left). There are also four three-light clerestory windows aligned above, along with a two-light window to the re-entrant angle of the aisle. Further along, a three-light hoodmoulded transept window and a roll-moulded window in the gable are present, along with a three-light clerestory window to the re-entrant angle.

The north-east elevation, facing St Leonard's Road, has a three-stage tower to the right. This tower incorporates a two-leaf timber door, set within an arched roll-moulded and hoodmoulded entrance, a traceried window on the second stage, two-light belfry openings in arched surrounds at the third stage, a lucarne opening to the spire, flanking octagonal pinnacles, and a finial at the apex. A three-light transept window, a roll-moulded gable window, and a three-light clerestory window to the re-entrant angle are also present. Later additions include a two-leaf timber door with a window to the left and above at the first floor. The church hall’s gable features leaded, three-light arched openings, with five arched openings in total.

The south-east elevation was not visible during a 1999 inspection.

The church has leaded and stained glass windows and a slate roof with stone skews and terracotta ridge work.

The interior showcases decorative capitals on columns supporting pointed arches, decorative ceiling corbels, timber wall posts, decorative work to tie beams, arched bracing, and timber altar furnishings and pews.

Iron lamp standards flank the main entrance. A wall-mounted postbox is located on Monument Road. A coped boundary wall encloses the site, with a two-leaf iron gate also on Monument Road.
