Description
Ardwell Mains is an earlier 19th-century farm complex with an open courtyard to the south and a farmhouse to the east, constructed from whinstone.
The farmhouse is a single-storey building with an attic, of rectangular plan. The east (entrance) elevation features an advanced, square-plan porch with pilasters and a pediment, sheltering a two-leaf timber door with a three-light letterbox fanlight above. Flanking the door are single windows at ground level and within re-entrant angles; single windows above break the eaves to form gables. A four-light window is situated at ground level within a gabled bay to the outer right, with a bipartite window above. A single window is positioned at ground level within the re-entrant angle. The west (rear) elevation is eight bays wide, with a timber door in the penultimate bay to the right, a single window to the outer right, three single windows in the centre, a timber door to the left, a single window to the penultimate bay to the left, and a small opening to the outer left.
The south-facing courtyard row is a single-storey, rectangular block with advanced gabled outer bays. The north elevation is seven bays long, featuring three central segmental-arched openings (two of which have been infilled with timber doors), flanked by single windows and timber doors, with two single windows to the ground floor and a single pointed arch window in the gablehead. The west (side) elevation has a timber door to the left and a single window to the right. The east (side) elevation presents two single windows.
The inner courtyard's east elevation is nine bays wide, with a timber door and fanlight on the left, two single windows to the outer left, and six single windows to the right (the window on the outer right being bipartite). The north elevation is six bays long, including three near-central segmental-arched openings with timber doors, a single window to the outer right, a passage leading to the rear of the courtyard to the left, and a modern window to the outer left. The west elevation is nine bays long, exhibiting a pattern of two single windows and a single timber door from left to right. A piended clock tower is situated on the roof at the outer right, featuring a timber-boarded surround. The outer courtyard’s west elevation showcases eight bays with a timber door on the outer left, two single windows to the right, a timber door, three single windows to the right (infill panels), and a single door to the outer right. The south elevation includes a passage to the rear courtyard on the right, a single window in the penultimate bay to the right, four single windows to the left, a single door to the left, and a lean-to addition to the outer left. The east elevation has three single windows to the left, a timber door to the penultimate bay to the right, and a single window to the outer right. The north (rear) elevation is twelve bays long, with an opening to the left, flanking single windows, four openings at the centre (including segmental arches to two on the left, the penultimate opening infilled, and the penultimate bay to the right leading to the inner courtyard), four single windows to the right, and a timber door to the outer right. Additional ranges extend to the north.
Most windows feature 12-pane timber sash and case construction. The roofs are covered with grey slate, and include rooflights, stone skews.
The interior contains timber stalls, whitewashed walls, and cobbled floors.
