Description

Dunend Primary School, located on School Lane in Cardenden, Auchterderran, was likely designed by William Williamson in 1910, with later additions to the south. This single-storey, gabled school features painted harl and contrasting red pantiles, with keystoned, round-headed openings.

The east elevation is symmetrical with six bays arranged around a central axis. Bays one, three, four, and six have tall, dormer-headed windows that break the eaves, with catslide roofs over bays one and six and piended roofs over bays three and four. Bays two and five are gabled, each featuring a round-headed window at the center, flanked by smaller windows and coped buttresses. A carved thistle is located in the gablehead, and there is a prominent ball-and-spike finialled, lead-roofed pagoda air-vent on the roof ridge. To the outer right, there is a lower recessed bay with a window, door, and a tall stack.

The west elevation mirrors the east but has a recessed bay to the outer left, which contains two windows and steps leading up to a small window that has been converted from a door, along with steps leading to the boiler house in the basement.

The south (entrance) elevation features three gables, with a keystoned Diocletian window in the center gablehead, flanked by small, horizontal tripartite windows in the larger gableheads, which have ball-finialled outer skewputts. The lower detail is obscured by an almost full-width flat-roofed extension.

The windows are small-pane glazing in top-opening sash and case look-alike timber frames. The roof has red pantiles, with a grey catslide dormer to the outer right. Other details include a coped and harled stack, terracotta coped skews, ball-finialled skewputts, and decorative cast-iron finials.

Inside, there is a central hall with rooflights and open-beaming, with six classrooms on each side. Although the ceilings have been lowered, the dado panelling has been retained.
