Description
Abbotshall Infant School, built in 1898 by William Williamson, is a single-storey building originally designed as an infant school. The building is constructed from rock-faced squared and snecked rubble with polished long and short quoins, and features an eaves course. The eastern, principal elevation is symmetrical and has three gables. Steps lead to a broad, flat-roofed, crenellated porch with a segmental-headed doorpiece and a curved pediment displaying a cartouche inscribed "Abbotshall Infant School". A two-leaf panelled timber door with a small-pane fanlight is set within the doorpiece; tripartite windows are positioned in the flanking bays, with further bipartite windows on the returns. A small gable with a tripartite window is centrally located, and behind it rises a square, finialled, two-stage timber louvered cupola. Larger gables with tripartite windows flank the centre. The western elevation features a smaller centre gable with a timber door and 4-part fanlight to the left, a small window to the right, and a stack to the gablehead. Flanking gables have raised centre transomed tripartite windows. The north elevation incorporates a dormer gablet with a raised central tripartite window breaking the eaves, two bipartite windows to the right, and a door with a further bipartite window to the left; a small, flat-roofed extension abuts the outer left. The south elevation features a central gablet similar to the north, alongside two bipartite windows to the right and left of centre, those to the right flanking an advanced, full-height, shouldered chimney breast which breaks the eaves and is raised above the coping. Six-pane glazing is set over plate glass lower sashes in timber sash and case windows. A grey slate roof covering is in place, along with coped ashlar skewputts with swept skewputts, cast-iron downpipes, and decorative rainwater hoppers. The interior is well-detailed and tailored, featuring a two-leaf part-glazed hall door with brass fittings leading to vestibule/cloakrooms with coat hooks and wash basins, alongside toilet cubicles with boarded timber swing doors. A top-lit centre hall is accented by roof beams and collars, a boarded dado, architraved doorways and a lintel course. Classrooms feature boarded dadoes, plain cornicing, and segmental-headed, small-paned windows to the centre hall and adjoining classrooms. The site is enclosed by semi-circular-coped rubble and low saddleback-coped boundary walls with railings, punctuated by ashlar gatepiers with cast-iron gates. A decorative cast-iron drinking fountain with the wording "Keep the Pavement Dry” and made by “Macfarlanes Pat Foundry Glasgow” is incorporated into the south boundary wall.
