Description
Dated 1861, with an addition in 1902 by D Forbes Smith, Gallatown Nursery School is a single-storey, five-bay school building displaying Italianate influences, notably in its tower. The construction consists of stugged squared and snecked rubble stonework with droved ashlar dressings. Key features include pedimented doorways, raised margins, relieving arches, and some round-headed openings, along with stone mullions.
The principal (north-west) elevation presents an advanced gable in the central bay, featuring a tripartite window and a round-headed bipartite opening within the finialled gablehead. Bipartite windows flank the gable on either side. A recessed bay is positioned between them, also featuring a bipartite window and windows on either side. Further advanced gables are located on the outer right, incorporating a pedimented doorway with a two-leaf panelled timber door, a two-part fanlight, flanking narrow lights, and a corbelled stack above the gablehead.
The two-stage entrance tower is engaged to the other elevations. The first stage has a pedimented doorway with a two-leaf panelled timber door, a two-part fanlight to the north-west, and a keystoned round-headed window to the north-east. A band course transitions to a short second stage with recessed panels containing blind quatrefoils, surmounted by keystoned, trefoil-headed, louvered openings. A mutuled cornice tops the stage, followed by a polychrome-slated, bellcast roof with a tall decorative iron finial.
The north-east elevation has a gabled bay centrally, with a tripartite window and flanking bipartite windows (the one on the right altered to a single window). A round-headed opening is found in the gablehead, similar to that on the principal elevation. A bipartite window is located in the penultimate bay to the left, and a tripartite window to the outer left. The tower (as described above) is positioned to the right of the centre, with bipartite windows in the recessed bays beyond.
The south-east elevation is asymmetrical, incorporating a gable to the outer right with a tripartite window above a round-headed opening. The south-west elevation is also asymmetrical and features five bays with varied window arrangements.
The school contains uPVC glazing and grey slates. Other original features visible externally include coped ashlar stacks, ashlar-coped skews with moulded skewputts, cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers and fixings.
The interior includes a top-lit central hall with a dado and architraved openings, and toilet cubicles with boarded timber doors. The headmaster's study boasts a carved timber fireplace and a private toilet with an original (1902) decorated ceramic toilet pan and wash basin, complemented by decorative cast-iron brackets and brass fittings. A room to the south-west has a ceramic-tiled dado, an encaustic-tiled floor, and a ceramic sluice pan.
The site is enclosed by low, coped rubble boundary walls, some with inset railings. Two pairs of flat-coped, square section ashlar gatepiers mark the north-west boundary.
