Description
Viewforth Parish Church, located on Viewforth Street in Kirkcaldy, was designed by J F Anderson of Dundee and built between 1875 and 1878. It's a broad, gabled church constructed in a T-plan layout, and prominently features a crenellated tower to the southwest. The church consists of a four-bay aisless nave, with buttressed transepts to the east, and a gabled porch to the northwest. The exterior is primarily of bull-faced squared and snecked rubble with ashlar dressings, while the rear (east) is of random rubble. The buttresses are 2-stage with a sawtooth coping. Horizontal band courses divide the tower stages. The window openings are pointed arch, and the tower features a corbelled parapet and stone mullions.
The west-facing (Viewforth Street) elevation displays a broad gable with a small, trefoil-headed tripartite window at the centre, below a taller, raised tripartite window. The gablehead is finished with triangular moulding and a cross finial. Flanking bays contain two close-set windows below a quatrefoil-detailed oculus. A small porch is slightly set back to the outer left, with steps leading to a two-leaf boarded timber door. A small blind oculus sits within the finialled gablehead, with a small return window to the left. The three-stage, square tower is located to the outer right.
The tower's first stage features a finialled, pedimented doorcase with a two-leaf boarded timber door, and a circular moulding on the tympanum. The second stage has a window to the east, with smaller windows to the west and south. The third stage includes timber-louvered openings below louvered oculi on each face, topped by a corbelled parapet with angle pinnacles.
The south-facing (Viewforth Terrace) elevation showcases a four-bay nave and a two-bay finialled transept projecting to the right, with buttresses to the outer angles. A cross-shaped detail is present in the gablehead roundel. The tower is advanced to the outer left. The north elevation mirrors the south elevation, but incorporates the porch on the outer right. The east elevation features a slightly advanced broad gable, containing tall windows to the left and right, and an oculus in the gablehead. A stack is also present. A later, single-storey hall, added in 1937, projects to the centre and left bays.
All church windows incorporate diamond pattern leaded glazing with coloured margins. The roof is covered in graded grey slates. Other external features include a coped ashlar stack with polygonal cans, ashlar-coped skew with gablet skewputts, and cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers on the south side.
The interior is galleried, with fixed timber pews, a boarded dado, and an open-timbered ceiling. A panelled pulpit is flanked by organ pipes. A full-width vestibule is home to a gothic marble memorial dedicated to Rev John Davidson Hay.
The church is enclosed by pyramidal-coped, square-section ashlar gatepiers and boundary walls, constructed from saddleback-coped rock-faced stone and semicircular-coped stone.
