Description
56 Windmill Road in Dysart is a pair of single-storey and attic, two-bay semi-detached cottages built in 1898 by architect D Forbes Smith in the Edwardian Tudor style. The cottages feature stocky porches with Ionic columns and are constructed of ashlar with rubble on the sides and rear. They have base and eaves courses, corbelled chimney breasts, and stone transoms and mullions with chamfered arrises.
The principal elevation is symmetrical, showcasing an advanced M-gable at the center. This gable includes a 12-light canted transomed window with a cornice and blocking course. Flanking the gable are stone porches with dwarf walls and cavetto cornices, along with a 6-light transomed window beneath a gunloop in the gableheads. The outer bays are recessed and feature canted 6-light transomed windows that wrap around the outer angles, which are moulded to corbelled skewputts over the center light.
On the south elevation, a dominant chimney breast pierces the right pitch of the gable and is accompanied by a window to the left and two further windows in the gablehead. The north elevation mirrors the south elevation.
The cottages have modern glazing, red tiles, and decorative terracotta ridge tiles. The moulded, coped ashlar stacks are complemented by decorative cans, while the ashlar-coped skews feature moulded skewputts and cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers. The boundary walls consist of saddleback-coped rubble retaining walls to the east and semicircular coped rubble boundary walls.
