Description

Ymca Hall in Townhead, Dysart, was designed by Alexander Laing in 1802. The hall itself is not included in this listing, but a porch was likely added in 1932. This former church features a classical, aisless, rectangular plan and is adorned with gablehead urns. The exterior is constructed of droved ashlar with polished margins and quoin strips, and it includes a base course and a moulded eaves cornice. The openings are round-headed with keystones, except for those on the southwest side.

On the southeast elevation facing Townhead, there is a five-bay layout with a central doorcase that has pilasters and a pediment. It features a two-leaf panelled timber door with a semicircular fanlight above, which is currently blocked. Above this, there is a large oculus, and tall windows are present in the flanking bays, along with a small ridge ventilator at the center.

The southwest elevation, facing Windmill Road, has a small polygonal porch that projects from the center bay, with the top of a round-headed opening behind it. There are blinded doorways in the flanking bays, one of which features a carved sandstone War Memorial commemorating both World Wars. The outer left quoin is inscribed with the year 1809. This elevation also includes three windows to the gallery and a louvered lunette in the gablehead.

The northwest elevation mirrors the southeast elevation, while the northeast elevation has two windows and a lunette in the gablehead. There is a small gabled wing or vestry at ground level, with a gable facing northwest that has two windows and an oculus in the gablehead. A later hall adjoins to the southeast.

All windows are currently blocked, and the roof is covered with grey slates, featuring ashlar-coped skews.

The graveyard contains 19th-century classical gravestones, including a variety of moulded pediments and obelisks. Notably, there is a classical stone on the east wall dating from 1821, which has fluted pilasters and a cornice topped with a scrolled pediment and a small urn.

The boundary walls are low and consist of ashlar coping and rubble.
