Description
8 Barns Crescent in Ayr is a pair of mirrored cottages built in the later 19th century. They are single storey with an attic and consist of six bays. The front is finished in polished ashlar, while the sides are made of rubble. The cottages feature a base course and a cornice, along with decorative finials at the attic.
On the northeast elevation, the entrances are located in the penultimate bays on the outer left and right. These entrances have round-arched doorways with keyblocks that rise from pilaster strips. They are adorned with a patera frieze and consoled dentilled cornices, and each has a timber door with a fanlight above. The inner bays contain bipartite windows with moulded labelmoulds and a scrolled scallop motif, while the outer bays are canted. At the attic level, there are small round-arched dormers in the center, flanked by canted dormers. A timber gate leads to 6A on the outer right.
The windows are plate glass timber sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate and features stone skews, moulded skewputts, corniced gablehead stacks, and circular cans.
The boundary wall is a low coped rubble wall with replacement iron entrance gates on the outer left and right. The interiors were not seen in 1998.
