Description
9 Barns Terrace in Ayr is a two-storey, 36-bay building designed by Robert Paton between 1845 and 1860, consisting of seven pairs of mirrored houses. The outer pairs and the central pair form slightly advanced pavilions. The entrance elevation features ashlar stonework, with a channelled design at the ground floor. It has a base course, a central band course separating the first and second floors, an eaves course, a cornice, and a blocking course on houses numbered 1, 2, 7, 8, 13, and 14. The first-floor windows have aprons and architraves.
The west entrance elevation has four bays for the outer and central pavilion paired houses, featuring central square-headed doorpieces with timber doors and letterbox fanlights. Above these doors, there are two single windows aligned at the first floor. The advanced outer bays have tripartite windows on both the first and second floors. The intermediate paired houses have six bays, also with central square-headed doorpieces, timber doors, and letterbox fanlights, along with two single windows above at the first floor and regular fenestration in the remaining bays on both floors.
The building predominantly features six-pane timber sash and case windows. It has a grey slate roof, which is piended for houses numbered 1, 2, 7, 8, 13, and 14, and includes corniced ridge and wallhead stacks with polygonal cans.
The interiors were not seen in 1998. The site is enclosed by a low coped boundary wall on the west elevation, which includes canted square-plan gatepiers at the outer left and right.
