Description
The Old Parish Church and Graveyard in Forglen, dated 1692, features the remains of a former church surrounded by later graveyard walls that include gatepiers and gates. The structure is built of random rubble with ashlar coping.
The church is small, oriented east-west, and has a rectangular plan. Its walls are made of random rubble with galleting and were formerly harled, featuring Turriff sandstone dressings. The church was later coped when the roof was removed. There is a door on the west side, and a later memorial has been built against the south wall. Inside, there is a dated dedication plaque and a wall cupboard with moulded architraves.
The graveyard was likely enclosed in the 18th century, with walls made of rubble and topped with ashlar coping. The northern gatepiers have stepped caps and ball and eagle finials, along with wrought-iron gates. The graveyard contains several gravestones and table-tombstones from the late 17th century and 18th century. Notably, there is a memorial to James George of Crovie from 1826 against the south wall of the church, featuring engaged composite columns with a frieze and entablature that encloses the memorial panel.
