Description

The mausoleum at Forglen House, built in 1865 by A and W Reid of Elgin, is a Gothic-style structure with a cruciform plan situated on a raised terrace. It is constructed from squared and coursed whinstone with cream ashlar dressings, featuring set-off, gablet-capped buttresses, and intricate sculptural details. The building includes a base course and string course, as well as moulded window surrounds and hoodmoulds adorned with masque label stops.

On the northeast elevation, ashlar steps lead up to the terrace, where there is a pointed-arch doorway set in a moulded panel, complete with an armorial and a stepped hoodmould. The boarded door has scroll detailing on the cast-iron hinges, and the moulded surround features nook-shafts (engaged columns) and quatrefoils. Above, round windows in the gable are fitted with trefoil glazing panels, and the gable is flanked by paired buttresses that are gabled with finials and crocketted pinnacles.

The southwest elevation has a band course that steps to enclose a moulded armorial panel, with a large rose window positioned above the gable. The buttressing is consistent with that of the northeast elevation.

The northwest and southeast elevations feature an ashlar niche in a crocketted gabled panel above a band course, which includes nook-shafts and a moulded pedestal. The buttresses are similar to those on the other elevations.

Inside, the mausoleum contains three tiers of burial vaults along the side walls, which are topped by angels on corbels. The rose window is filled with stained glass.

The exterior is finished with grey slates and includes gargoyles, skew and blocking courses with raised ashlar bands featuring quatrefoil ornamentation, and stone gargoyles. The gables are topped with cruciform finials.

The boundary walls consist of low, ashlar coped rubble retaining walls topped with cast-iron railings that display a quatrefoil motif. The square gatepiers have gablet caps, while the corner piers are simply detailed. The gates feature spearhead railings, quatrefoils, and a horn motif.
