Description

The Buckingham War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, designed by W Coles and constructed by J Coles. The memorial was updated to include remembrance details after the Second World War. It is made of Mansfield stone and is located in the middle of the access road to the north-east of the Church of SS Peter and Paul in Buckingham.

The memorial features a carved stone base that consists of a battered plinth over a two-stepped base. The plinth has four faces, each incised with remembrance mottos and the names of the fallen. The north face reads: "OUR GLORIOUS DEAD /THEIR NAMES SHALL /LIVE FOR EVERMORE /1939-1945," along with the names of 24 fallen soldiers. The south face states: "TO /THE GLORY OF GOD /AND /IN GRATEFUL MEMORY." The east and west faces each list the names of 48 fallen soldiers, commemorating a total of 120 individuals.

At the top of the plinth is a moulded square base adorned with carved foliation at the chamfered corners. Above this moulding, two decorative rings support an approximately 2-meter tall octagonal shaft that rises to a carved decorative collar featuring laurel-leaf carving. Above the collar is a stone cross, approximately 1.5 meters high and 1 meter wide. The cross shaft and cross-members are octagonal in profile, ending with carved octagonal shields that display foliage in relief. The cross is also supported at its center by an inset stone wheel.
