Description

No. 8 Castle Street is a cottage dating from the early 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with flared headers and features a plain-tile roof from the 20th century, along with brick end and front lateral stacks. The cottage has a two-unit plan and stands two storeys tall with an attic, comprising a three-window range.

The central entrance is a six-panel door with a round-arched head and glazed top panels, situated within a 20th-century glazed conservatory porch. To the right on the ground floor, there is a three-light thin wood mullion and transom window with a central casement and a painted flat-arched brick head. The left side of the ground floor has a two-light casement, and there are similar two-light casements on the first floor to the left and right, all featuring similar heads. There is a blank window on the first floor with a round-arched brick head. Above the framing of a two-light casement, there is a small open pediment with a thin wood lintel. The cottage has a rendered plinth with a cellar window on the left, and it is topped with brick-coped parapets and a pediment.

No. 8 Castle Street is part of a group of three cottages, including Nos. 9 and 10, which bear a strong resemblance to the Red Buildings constructed by Earl Cobham of Stowe after a devastating fire in the town on March 15, 1725, which left many families homeless. The original cottages were located in the old Cow Fair at the North End and were demolished in 1866. It is likely that Nos. 8-10 were built around the same time, possibly as part of the same development.
