Description
No. 11 Castle Street is a house from the 18th century that was altered and extended around 1875 by Edward Swinfen Harris. The building is constructed of painted brick with a plain-tile roof and brick lateral stacks. It has a two-unit plan and is two stories high with a two-window range. A six-panel door is located just left of center, framed by a moulded wood surround with thin, incised pilasters and an entablature featuring a cornice hood. The ground and first floors have sash windows with 19th-century glazing bars and segmental-arched heads. There is a rendered plinth, and some brickwork in English bond is visible to the right of the right-hand windows, along with a pilaster strip at the right end.
To the left, there is a lower two-story, one-window extension from around 1875, which features a six-pane window on the ground floor and a timber-framed first floor with rectangular panels arranged in two tiers. The lower row has red brick infill laid in various patterns, with a two-light casement window to the right of center and two taller rectangular panels to the left, adorned with impressed ornaments of sunflowers and vases. A timber gallery on the left side elevation at the first-floor level consists of four bays with pointed arches, pierced spandrels, and a balustrade with turned balusters. The hipped plain-tile roof has gablet framing a small three-light window, and the side slope of the roof is interrupted by a large brick stack with a tall flue. Inside, the house features chamfered spine beams.
