Description

No. 1 Bristle Hill, formerly listed as No. 7A Castle Street, is a house that has been converted into a shop and workshop. It dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century and has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a hipped roof covered with plain tiles from the 20th century, along with brick stacks at the ends and ridge.

The house has a two-unit lobby entry plan and stands two storeys tall with an attic, presenting a three-window range to the main front facing Bristle Hill. This façade includes a central blocked original door with a segmental-arched head. To the left of the centre, there is a 19th-century part-glazed door, which is accessed by three steps and has a wooden lintel. A bay window to the left has a limestone rubble base, is brick-quoined, and incorporates a large ammonite in a brick panel; it features a timber superstructure with a hipped plain-tile roof. To the right, there is a shop window with a rendered surround and a moulded cornice, and a similar shop window is found on the right side elevation facing Castle Street.

On the first floor, there is a 16-pane sash window in the centre with a wooden lintel, flanked by tripartite sashes, while the right side elevation has a blank window. The building is accentuated by a high coursed squared limestone plinth, a storey band, and wave-moulded brick eaves. There are also two gabled roof dormer windows.

Inside, the workshop on the ground floor to the left features a large open fireplace with a stop-chamfered bressumer and a collar truss roof.
