Description

Marriotts is a house that has served various purposes, including a milliner's shop, haberdashery, petrol station, and workshop, and is now used as offices. It was likely built in the mid-18th century and has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is rendered over brick and features a plain-tile roof from the 20th century with brick end stacks. It has a double-depth plan and is three stories tall with a five-window range.

On the left side, there is a 19th-century double shop front with round arch-headed divisions and fluted Doric columns at either end, supporting a fascia with a dentilled cornice. To the right on the ground floor, there are two 12-pane sash windows with moulded rendered surrounds. Similar sash windows are present on the first and second floors. The building has a plinth, rusticated quoins, storey bands, and a plain stone-coped parapet.

The right side elevation facing Elm Street features a door with an overlight, panelled reveals, and a moulded wood surround topped with a cornice hood. Inside, the ground floor was opened up in the 19th century, featuring a new stairway that is preceded by an arcaded screen with three elliptical arch-headed openings, the center one being much wider. There is a top-lit corkscrew spiral stair leading to a first-floor gallery, which has a ramped and wreathed mahogany handrail and cut tread ends, along with a coved ceiling that has panel mouldings and a domed skylight.

The back wall of the staircase hall has a large central mirror framed by what is likely the original front door surround, which includes Corinthian half-columns supporting a full entablature. The building was formerly a milliner's shop and haberdashery in the 19th century and operated as a petrol station and bicycle repair shop named 'Marriotts' until 1986.
