Description
The War Memorial on Main Street in Lumphinnans was designed by A Murdoch in 1923 and is made of Cullaloe sandstone. It commemorates those who fell in both World Wars.
The memorial features a stepped base that supports a corniced square pier with granite panels, topped with carved decoration. At the top, there is a Latin cross on a moulded plinth.
On the south elevation, a granite panel reads: 'TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF LUMPHINNANS WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR - AND THE WORLD WAR 1939-45', followed by the names of the fallen. Above this, the carved date 1914-19 is enclosed within a laurel wreath.
The west elevation has a granite panel listing the names of the fallen. Above it, there is a laurel wreath that encloses a carved motif of crossed swords with the word 'WAR'.
The north elevation is identical to the west elevation but features a wreath enclosing a celestial crown of victory.
The east elevation mirrors the north elevation but has a wreath enclosing a cross of sacrifice.
Surrounding the memorial are low metal railings on the west, south, and east sides.
