Description

Rawcliffe War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with later additions for subsequent conflicts. It is situated on a triangular traffic island at the junction of Station Road and Royal Drive.

The memorial takes the form of a tall cenotaph made from regular-coursed Portland Stone blocks, topped with a stepped capstone. The east and west faces feature pilasters at the corners, while the east face includes an inset, fielded panel between the pilasters, which has an inverted sword and wreath carved in relief. Below this panel, the words "OUR GLORIOUS DEAD" are also carved in relief. The cenotaph is raised on a large, four-sided plinth that has a moulded cornice and foot, sitting atop a stone block base. This entire structure is elevated on a two-stepped platform.

The plinth has an inset, fielded panel that bears the inscription, "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ (56 NAMES)." The dates 1914 and 1919 are incised above the inscription, with a cross pattée symbol between them. Below this, affixed to the base, is a later plaque with the dates 1939 and 1949, also featuring a cross pattée symbol, followed by the names of 23 individuals who died in the Second World War. Additionally, a plaque on the south face of the top step of the platform reads, "ON NATIONAL SERVICE/ (2 NAMES)." All lettering on the memorial is incised.

The memorial is surrounded by metal railings that feature scroll work detail and fleur-de-lys finials, with a gate on the southern boundary providing access to the memorial.
