Description
Turn Bridge is an 18th-century bridge located on Snaith Road in East Cowick. It is constructed from tooled sandstone ashlar with some rock-faced ashlar dressings. The bridge features a triple-arch design, with abutments that are splayed out to the roadway entrances. It has three bays, with the central bay projecting forward. The structure includes a rock-faced ashlar plinth and a stepped-in upper course made of smooth-faced ashlar. The central arch is a keyed rusticated round arch, flanked by single side arches within the plinth, which have rock-faced ashlar voussoirs.
There is a band at the original road level, with a coped parapet situated between cylindrical piers that have square bases, a raised band, and domed caps. The central tunnel vault displays chamfered rustication. The lower sections of the bridge are largely obscured by soil, with only the side arches visible to the north, and the roadway is raised on either side. The bridge spans the Old River Don, which is now a small stream. This branch of the Don was improved by Cornelius Vermuyden in the 1620s, and further improvements in 1726 resulted in this section being by-passed by a new cut to the southeast.
