Description
The building at 1 and 2 Post Office Row is a house, originally divided into two dwellings, dating from the mid-to-late 17th century. It has undergone later alterations, including the insertion of a shop, and repairs in 1983, which involved re-roofing. The construction is primarily red brick in English bond, with the left-hand return rendered. The roof is tiled with clay.
The original plan consisted of a two-room central entrance hall, with a later kitchen outshut added to the left. The building is two storeys high, and has five bays of unequal width, defined by full-height pilasters, although those flanking the second bay have been removed below first-floor level. A stepped plinth is visible. The fourth bay has a step leading to a 20th-century door set beneath an inserted soldier arch. A 20th-century casement window is located in the fifth bay. To the left, there is a step leading to a blocked door and a 20th-century casement window set within a blocked former shop window opening. A 19th-century post box is set within a brick and ashlar surround. A two-course brick band runs along the first floor. The first floor windows include 20th-century casements, with truncated pilasters carried on 20th-century brick corbels flanking the window to the second bay; a casement to the fifth bay; and small blocked windows to the remaining bays. The eaves feature a modillioned brick cornice. The roof has raised verges with brick-coped gables, and end stacks. The rear elevation mirrors the front with a plinth, pilasters and cornice.
The interior features chamfered spine beams, wide chimneys flanked by blocked attic openings. At the time of resurvey, number 1 was empty and unoccupied.
