Description
The Great Chart War Memorial, built in 1921, is located in a raised memorial garden that can be accessed from The Street via a flight of steps. It features a Portland Stone cross set on an octagonal pedestal, which rests on a stepped octagonal base. The cross tapers gently and has a bronze sword placed over the crosspiece. There is a carved inscription on the pedestal, highlighted in black paint, which reads: ‘TO OUR GLORIOUS DEAD / THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE’, along with the names of the fallen recorded by date. On the reverse side, it states: ‘ERECTED BY THE GREAT CHART SAILORS’ AND SOLDIERS’ FUND’. Additionally, a later tablet affixed to the base commemorates those who fell in the Second World War.
