Description
The Fleet War Memorial is a stone memorial built in 1920, with names added after the Second World War and later in the 20th century. It is made of Portland stone and is situated in Gurkha Square, facing south-east towards a car park.
The memorial features a curved stone wall that extends on either side of a sturdy stone cross. The wall is constructed from rough-hewn, squared-stone blocks and rises higher in the center. It has rough-hewn coping and includes a low stone bench at each end. The front of the wall displays four stone tablets inscribed with the names of those who fell in service.
The cross is positioned atop a broad, tapering shaft and is designed in a geometric Celtic style. It is supported by a battered, stepped plinth, which is adorned with a fifth tablet. This tablet is carved in plain relief with the inscription ‘OUR GLORIOUS DEAD / 1914 - 1918 AND 1939 – 1945’, and below it are additional names of the fallen. At the bottom of the tablet, there is a secondary inscription that reads ‘AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN WARS AND CONFLICTS SINCE.’ In total, 155 combatants are commemorated as of 2018.
