Description
The Forge is a single-storeyed rectangular building located in Crookham, originally built in the early 19th century with some alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. Constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, it features a pyramidal tiled roof and a brick chimney stack, with a 19th-century brick exterior on the south side. The main front has two early 19th-century cast iron framed casement windows with 'Gothic' headed panes at the top, along with central double doors. The left side elevation includes a six-light window, while the right side, facing the street, has a continuous seven-pane window. Inside, the building has an angled queen strut roof with a ridge-piece, which was re-raftered, likely between the wars. There are two brick furnaces with curved brick hoods supported on brick brackets, and an iron fireback bearing the maker's name: W Haynes Reading. The Forge was used as a forge until 1958.
