Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade I listed building located on the north-west side of The Street in Great Chart. It was constructed using ragstone and features a chancel from the 13th century, with north and south chapels added in the 15th century. The nave and north aisle date back to the 14th century, while the south aisle and porch were built in the 15th century. The west tower serves as a landmark for the surrounding area. The jambs of the vestry door are early Norman, dating to around 1080. Inside, there is a 15th-century font and a set of rood stairs, along with 19th-century box pews. The churchyard contains several 18th-century stone headstones adorned with cherub, skull, or hourglass motifs, and the paths are paved with stone from Bethersden marble.
