Description

The Tomb of Captain John Bennett is a chest tomb dated 1716, likely created by the mason Thomas Stayner. It is made of limestone, with a black limestone slab on top. The sides of the tomb are adorned with bulbous acanthus leaves, featuring a shallow central projection on each side that displays symbolic motifs: a war ship on one side and naval weaponry on the other. Each end of the tomb has a cartouche displaying Bennett’s family crest. The base and cornice of the chest are formed by curved and stepped mouldings.

The top of the tomb features a thick, deeply overhanging slab with moulded edges. It is inscribed with the words: ‘HERE LYETH INTERR’D YE BODY OF / CAP. JOHN BENNETT / COMMANDER OF HIS MAJESTY / SHIP LENOX & WHO DIED / THE 30TH OF JANUARY 1716 / AGED 46 YEAR’. The moulded stonework on the base is in good condition, and the inscription is still clearly legible.
