Description
The Parish Church of St Margaret is a Grade I listed building with origins in the 13th century and significant later developments, primarily from the 15th century. It features walls made of flint and ragstone rubble, with a tower constructed from Reigate stone ashlar. The western tower is crenellated and has three stages, along with a taller stair turret that dates back to the mid-15th century. The chancel originates from the 13th century, while the nave and aisles were added later, incorporating earlier 12th-century columns. Inside, there are fine medieval roofs in the nave and north aisle, and the chancel has a plaster ceiling from 1772. The outer north aisle and chapel were added in stages during the 16th century, using materials from a destroyed abbey. The church contains an outstanding collection of monuments and fittings, including an early 17th-century octagonal moulded font, notable brasses, a late 16th-century funeral helm, and early 19th-century seating that incorporates 18th-century woodwork.
