Description

The remains of Barking Abbey and the old churchyard walls date from the 12th century and later. The general layout of the main building can still be discerned, with outer walls of the abbey church surviving in places to a height of several feet. Other parts of the abbey, including the cloisters, are indicated by restored footings. The churchyard walls are made of medieval stone or 16th-century brick, with later repairs. These ruins belong to one of the most significant nunneries in the country, founded in 666 AD by St Erkenwald, dissolved in 1539, and destroyed in 1541. The abbey was excavated in 1910.
