Description
Barking Magistrates Court and Railings comprises a building dating from 1893, constructed in the manner of the Flemish Renaissance style. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings. It is three storeys high and features a central range with a large, enriched stone portico. This portico is flanked by gabled wings that project slightly forward. The windows are mullioned and transomed. A stone bandcourse runs to the level of the first floor, topped with an egg and dart ovolo cornice. Oriel windows are present on the first floor of the gables, featuring enriched apron corbels and ogee shaped heads. Another stone bandcourse and cornice define the second floor level. The roof is steeply pitched slate, surmounted by a cupola. The cupola includes a clock and is crowned by a fine wrought-iron finial and weather vane. Plain, three-light dormers are also present. Large brick and stone chimney stacks are visible. The building is surrounded by wrought-iron railings, which incorporate lamp holders and globe lanterns.
