Description
The Tomb of John Britton is located in West Norwood Memorial Park, dating from around 1857 and designed by George Godwin. It features a tall, rough-hewn rectangular slab made of brown millstone grit, set on end, with a simple inscription on a short square plinth of grey granite. This monument is noted for its uniquely plain and massive design for its time. John Britton was a prominent medieval antiquary in the early 19th century, known for his pioneering studies of English cathedrals and numerous publications on the subject. George Godwin was an architect and the editor of the influential 19th-century architectural journal, The Builder. The tomb is included in the listing for its historical significance related to Britton's contributions to antiquarian studies.
