Description
The Old Library Building, located at 14-16 Knights Hill, is an adult education institute that was originally a library. It was designed by R.J. Smith in 1887 and opened in 1888. The building features a Flemish style, constructed from red brick in Flemish bond with Ham Hill stone dressings and some areas of roughcast. It has a mansard tiled roof and brick and stone chimneystacks.
The structure is two storeys high with attics and has ten windows. The right-hand portion presents a symmetrical design with three hipped dormers featuring casements. A central two-storey loggia is topped with an elaborate swansneck pediment that displays the date 1887 in carved brick. The first floor showcases seven stone terms with busts of notable figures including Homer, Sir Walter Scott, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Dickens, and Socrates, accompanied by an inscription below that reads "Free Public Library." The ground floor is supported by four columns that are partly fluted and partly plain, featuring Venetian-type capitals. The wings have two casements set in arches on the first floor, adorned with terracotta cherubs above and aprons below. Additionally, there is one four-light mullioned and transomed arched window on the ground floor.
The left-hand side of the building matches the style of the right side, featuring one hipped dormer with a casement, three casements on the first floor, a five-light window on the ground floor, and a doorcase on the left side. This building is recognized as one of the earliest free public libraries in central London.
