Description

The Church of St Luke, built in 1822 by Bedford, is a Grade II* listed building located on Knights Hill. It is constructed of pale yellow brick with ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate roof, showcasing a Greek revival style. The church is oriented north-south and has a hexastyle Corinthian portico with a pediment at the north end. Above the portico is a slim square tower that includes a clock at its base, a bell stage with Doric screens and corner antifixae, and an open 'tower of winds' topped with a shallow dome and cross finial. The six-bay returns have first floor windows that are round arched and set in simple architraves. Inside, the church features a tall, four-bay classical arcade, a low barrelled nave roof, and a raised chancel. There is a carved screen from 1879 leading to the Lady Chapel, an ornate hood over the altar, and two good modern windows in the aisles.
