Description
The entrance arches and gates to West Norwood Memorial Park were designed by Sir William Tite and date from around 1836 to 1837. They are constructed of pale brick and yellow stone. The main feature is a large central buttressed brick archway, which has a stone four-centred vehicle entrance arch. This arch is moulded and hollow chamfered, with spandrels that display shields bearing the arms of the dioceses of Canterbury and Winchester. Above the arch, a parapet cornice rises to a central peak, featuring an escutcheon inscribed with "South Metropolitan Cemetery Incorporated AD MDCCCXXXVI."
Flanking the main archway are large Gothic style cast iron double carriage gates that have ogee centre panels, which are similar to the boundary railings. To the right of the main entrance, there is a smaller pedestrian four-centred arch gateway. This smaller arch is adorned with a carved crown and a scroll inscribed with "Deus Deo" in a stepped pediment, and it features the date 1837 on its inner side, along with a Gothic style cast iron gate.
