Description
The West Norwood Memorial Park walls, iron fences, railings, gate piers, and gates on the west and south sides date to circa 1836 and were designed by Sir William Tite. At Norwood High Street, a low plinth supports tall cast iron railings in a Gothic style, with tall brick piers at the ends incorporating stone battlemented tops and supporting cast iron double gates. Extending east and north from the northern pier is plain cast iron fencing. Running east, south and east from the southern pier, a tall wall is constructed of multicoloured stock brick with a stone plinth and top copings, and includes flat buttresses. Taller brick piers are placed at intervals, all featuring battlemented stone tops. A section of cast iron fencing, similar to that at the High Street end, is located in the centre of the south wall. The entire structure was solidly constructed to deter body-snatchers. See also Robson Road for related features.
